As a contractor, there isn't much benefits. You only get a discounted metropass as far as I know. No prescriptions, no dental, etc.

Best: no longer need a prescription for massage; glasses are now a separate amount from eye exams. Worst: no spending account for USW employees

If you are grad student working as a course instructor, the benefits are very helpful (e.g. extended health and dental)

Maternity = 18 weeks pregnancy leave, 10 weeks parental leave covered at 95% top up. (7 months), though of course you can take up to a year and a half as per provincial rules, but no extra top up. 3 weeks vacation starting. After 5 years it goes up to... 3 weeks and 1 day. After 10 years it goes up to 3 weeks and...2 days. Good health benefits, but you pay for it. (Around $50 a month for the health premiums for a single person.) Great pension plan, but again, it comes out of your salary.

StarStarStarStarStar Huidig: Research Assistant in Toronto, Ontario

The best thing of being a research assistant is the flexibility of when and where to work most of the time. Plus, in the field of electrical engineering, you have opportunities to increase your net income (net of tuition fees and such) by being a teaching. Doubling the income per year is possible if you are a senior PHD student. However, depending on your research area, sometimes the scarcity of research equipment is an issue.
