Ik heb een voltijdbaan bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Langer dan 3 jaar)

    Pluspunten

Mission has a very significant impact on the health of Canadians!

    Minpunten

Struggling financially, many lay offs over the past 4 years
Senior leadership protect their own, fail to deal with poor leadership
In a state of extreme change, placing extreme pressure on middle management and staff
Seem to be in survival mode which is creating a toxic work environment

    Advies aan management

Downward pressure on staff does not motivate, it actually creates disengagement.
Deal with leaders not demonstrating the corporate values.

Ik heb gewerkt bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Langer dan 3 jaar)

    Pluspunten

They might have more time off with personal days and shut down at holidays, but they will work you to make up for that.

    Minpunten

New CEO is horrible leader. Uses intimidation and has no constructive communication skills when dealing with staff. Does not engage any staff unless they are within a few feet of his office. Speaks about staff in French in front of non French speaking staff and mentions names so you can’t understand what’s being said.

Was a better organization with previous CEO.

Massive layoffs happened in Summer but spread out so not to draw media attention.

Donor dollars spent on huge salaries for management

Ik heb een voltijdbaan bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Korter dan een jaar)

    Pluspunten

    - Long-time employees (are amazing, kind, passionate people.

    - The overall cause is good and money does go towards funding research and well-established core programs

    - You get a lot of time off (3 weeks starting, wellness and personal days, holiday closures), and the benefits are decent.

    Minpunten

    - No employee training or growth. There's a website with a bunch of videos, but honestly, you'll find more useful content just googling or going on youtube. You basically kind of just read about your job and figure it out and it's very restrictive as to whom you can ask questions and about what. You won't develop a lot of transferable skills or knowledge.

    - The whole going digital approach and modernizing have been so incredibly terrible that it's really difficult to fully comprehend. Let's just say the new fancy piece of software we are supposed to use daily to plan, track and implement our projects is so poorly designed that it's virtually useless. The rest of our tech infrastructure is so outdated that it severely affects productivity.

    - Salary is not great. Like another reviewer said, our entire team's salaries won't come close to that of those higher executive roles.

    - You're left to constantly find workarounds for pretty much everything because the processes have not been clearly thought out to begin with and feedback is only sort of heard.

    - Teamwork is not encouraged, or it is, but not in practice.

    - There is a complete lack of transparency and a lot of truly strange power struggles/workplace politics.

    - Company culture is poor and getting worse and there's been no effort to improve it besides to wait for people to leave, and people are leaving. They've let go of the people who have real talent, passion and energy because they were often the ones who were also outspoken and willing to fight for their colleagues, volunteers and donors. It's a revolving door which makes it impossible to build relationships with the community. Once the long-timers leave, all the relationships will be gone.

    - There is an incredible lack of real and relevant expertise in upper management.

    - There's a severe lack of appreciation, empathy and gratitude shown to lower level employees, everyday donors and volunteers. The focus is on major gifts, and people are just numbers.

    - It's a toxic work environment and it does not look like it's about to change. You'll never really be heard, just silenced through various means.

    - There is so much waste of materials, volunteer time, staff time and ultimately donor dollars.

    - Now is not the right time to join this organization. Maybe after those up top leave and are replaced by competent individuals who actually care about people and not just numbers. It will happen eventually. HSF didn't grow into such a big and well-respected organization through brute force. Or it'll crash and burn and be built from the ground up again.

    - It's been a heartbreaking experience working here. I have no faith in this organization as it currently stands and feel guilty about bringing in donor dollars.

Ik heb een voltijdbaan gehad bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Langer dan 10 jaar)

    Pluspunten

    - great vacation package
    - decent benefits
    - get to see first hand how c- level use donation dollars

    Minpunten

    - top heavy
    - the CFO does not have a finance degree
    - total mismanagement of funds
    - no governance over donation dollars
    - during layoffs, even seeks to hire a director
    - no chance for advancement, rather hire expensive rotating door of contractors
    - no chance for self improvement or external training
    - Hr's greatest achievement is introducing Lynda.com for employee training
    - favoritism is regarded highly
    - yearly raises do not match the rate of inflation
    - managers are too afraid for their job to fight for yours

    Advies aan management

    - More governance and transparency over donation dollar spend. This is hard earned money and sometimes earned over a lifetime, that people are donating to the cause. There is a brochure on this information but I've searched this and the financial reports but no where does it provide a breakdown the dollars spent on director and CEO salaries, their first class travel, entertainment expenses, entertaining expenses,
housing expenses and all this used all on the backs of donors who blindly donate to the "cause".
    - Invest in employees training rather than hire contractors.
    - improve ALL processes within the organization

Ik heb een voltijdbaan bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Langer dan een jaar)

    Pluspunten

-Very good vacation package : 3-4 weeks starting, 10 personal days, closed during Christmas holidays
-People are passionate about cause, although management seems to take advantage of that and imagine people will just devote their life to the foundation just out of passion
-flexible hours and flexibility to work from home

    Minpunten

I would not recommend anyone working there
-Toxic environment, managers and up are bullies and use the genuine kindness of less senior employees to manipulate them
    - Teams work in silos and collaboration between employees is not encouraged, feels like everything you do has to be a secret you cannot share with others
    - supposedly risk management but in reality it’s micromanagement. - - The foundation cares more about its image than its employees. It will do anything to preserve its positive image in the public, even though if inside everything is tearing down
    - no clear direction. How many more restructuring do we need before they realize that it’s upper management that needs to go. With each re structuring, the bullies stay and the nice honest people with integrity are let go
    - lack of transparency and ethics
    - just goes by rules and procedures instead of using common sense
    - spend most time working on developing procedures and rules that will only serve once than actually implementing things right
    - the foundation says it promotes diversity, but most senior roles are occupied by Caucasian in a disproportionate manner
    - no opportunity for growth... honestly Lynda.com... and that’s it.
    - fools people into thinking they are saving lives when everything they want in the end is to obtain more funding so that they can keep their jobs
    - incompetent people in senior roles. Bullies managing people.
I could go on and on but basically my message is to stay away from the organization. I don’t even want to support it as a charity knowing how things work internally.

    Advies aan management

Recognize how badly you are managing people. Your employees are unhappy and it’s taking a toll on their health. How can you say you are saving lives when you are burying your own staff?
Stop encouraging bullies and give credit to the “small” people. Stop being so hierarchical and narrow-minded.
Stop saying things but not act by it. Stop saying you won’t tolerate work harassment and bullying but turn a blind eye to it.

Ik heb een voltijdbaan gehad bij Heart and Stroke Foundation (Langer dan 3 jaar)

    Pluspunten

Fairly good benefit and vacation package, have a matching pension though not a whole lot. Depending on who you are working with, you could be working with some very nice co-workers

    Minpunten

    - Upper management is a all-white boys club, no diversity whatsoever

    - Decision cames from top-down and those are people who so far removed from the reality - makes it almost impossible for field workers to achieve their so called 'goal'

    - Wasting hard-earned fundraising money to pay too many CEOs, but never refills a position for coordinators who actually are the one doing most of the work, Those at the lowest of the totem pole gets overworked and burned out easily

    - Some senior management has no regard or respect on donor dollars, kept asking for nice gadget and kept getting them, because no one dare to challenge this unethical behaviour

    - HR is quite useless, they don't know how the jobs they are hiring are for, they are not efficient (to say this is an understatement); in many cases, they are viewing the employee as a liability rather than assets

    - in general, those lifers who had manager titles or above treat other employees with disrespect, and looks down on people, their tactics usually are bullying their way through to get what they want or cry to their bosses - pushing back usually ends badly if you are not a manager or director of sort

    - lacks transparency - the recent restructuring is a huge example, everything happens so secretively

    - salary increase every year can't even match the inflation (1% lol)

    - Management never make an effort to get to know/recognize their employees

All in all, not recommended for employment, nor donation - a large portion of your money will be paying for some nice gadget/salary for those CEOs/VPs/Directors

    Advies aan management

Start to treat your employees like humans who have to pay their bills, get rid of the redundant regional CEO structure, be responsible with donor money. Don't just say embrace diversity, do it - and set examples at the top

    Pluspunten

Great time off, benefits decent, passionate volunteers and supporters, great cause

    Minpunten

The upper management in the fundraising arm needs to be fired. They have no people skills whatsoever and think that everyone is replaceable. As well, they don't understand processes and think that the front liners should clean up their messes (which are massive).

    Advies aan management

Always keep in mind that while "it's not personal, it's just business" is a meaningful motto, when you're dealing in a business where people are at the heart of your business model, you DO need to consider them when making decisions. People talk, people listen and people walk away. Like they should right now when evaluating this foundation right now. p.s. maybe get rid of some of the CEOs and not just the minions who have to do all the work.
