    Pluspunten

Pay is better than anywhere else compared to surrounding hospitals. Benefits are very generous with 7-8 hrs annual leave plus 4 hours of sick leave per paycheck. Nurse ratios are set at 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights. You never get sent home on low census. They have opportunities to go back to school, but you have to commit 1-3 years in return at the VA depending on what you go back for. Currently they do not pay for NP school as there is no demand at this facility. The vets are an amazing patient population to work with. They have a union.

    Minpunten

Charting is horrendous. They keep saying they'll get Cerner, but they've been saying that for a few years. I have never seen so many lazy people in my life. A lot of the staff are negligent towards the vets, do the bare minimum, and are only there for a paycheck. No self scheduling at all. They will put you where ever they need you with no input from you. There is limited parking so many employees have to take shuttles back and forth to the campus. The nurses and aids have no professional respect between each other and it's very cliquey. Most of the aids just sit around and gossip all day. Most nurses have never worked anywhere else outside of here and don't know what private sector is like, so they're resistant to change. Nursing orientation is a complete waste of time with almost no applicable information. There's a huge disconnect between management and staff. First day on the floor and management had nothing prepared for new staff orientations. Because it is a teaching hospital, new nurses have to be very careful when following doctor orders. It seems like staff are running things how they like, no policies anywhere in sight, and management can't or won't do anything about issues being reported. I have yet to meet more than a handful of friendly staff in the entire facility.

    Advies aan management

Please discipline staff and provide customer service training to ALL employees. Management needs to be more prepared and monitor staff. Get a better charting system so we can provide safer and more efficient patient care.

    Pluspunten

Government job that will never go away.

    Minpunten

Low pay. Too much middle management. Lack of upward mobility. Favoritisms. You also get a lot of angry, old vets who complain about the VA while demanding their free health care. They will treat you like garbage until you inform them that you are a Vet as well.

    Advies aan management

    Pay more.

Ik heb een voltijdbaan bij US Department of Veterans Affairs (Langer dan 3 jaar)

    Pluspunten

PAY - competitive, shift and weekend differential is the BEST anywhere
    10 paid holidays a year
EASY work with low patient-RN ratios
No being sent home based on low census
Great benefits - (401k matching, retirement, health, dental and vision insurance, etc)

    Minpunten

Raises - only get a step increase every other year
Difficult to advance to Nurse III - even with a Master's Degree!
HAVE to monitor paycheck as they frequently get it incorrect then debit your check without notice - has gotten better with the new system.
EMR is horrible - ED has one area to chart meds; ICUs have a totally different EMR and medication admin system so med/surg units can't see ANY of it as we don't have ICU access.
Revolving door of same patients. SO many frequent flyers especially for ETOH - you see abuse of the system daily.

Probably the MOST frustrating thing is there is no punishment or consequences for lazy or abusive workers. So many employees would be fired in a heartbeat if they did this in the private sector! ie being habitually late, workers coming to the unit and saying they're not going to do this or that even tho it's within their job description and basic duties, etc.

Most units have the VA rotating schedule - which is a disadvantage to night shift workers - on two, off two, on three rotating - additionally your schedule is set - there is NO self scheduling like the private sector.

GET RID OF BAD EMPLOYEES! creates a negative environment

    Pluspunten

Fairly flexible work schedule, insurance coverage, decent work-life balance, friendly staff/team members

    Minpunten

It’s a government job so, POLITICS!! If you can’t handle politics in the private sector, you won’t like it here. Working here also take a good vision of you plan to change anything. The VA is the Titanic, not a speed boat!

    Advies aan management

Keep finding ways to motivate your good workers! I’m fortunate to work at a great VA but I’ve heard horror stories about other locations!!
