Ik werk voltijd bij Success Academy Charter Schools voor 3 jaar

    Pluspunten

The growth that I have had in the past four years as a teacher surpasses the experience I could have had elsewhere. Success pushes for your development as a teacher, forming you to be the best version of yourself in front of children. That being said, your development also depends on who your school leaders are. However, Success as an organization is quick to make changes, so they will recognize when something is not working and work towards improving it. Additionally, the benefits you receive are an added plus.

The work life balance is difficult. We do work long hours and have a lot of expectations as a teacher. As mentioned above, your experience can also vary depending on your school leader. If you cannot handle stress, then teaching will not be the job for you.

Ik heb korter dan een jaar als voltijd bij Success Academy Charter Schools gewerkt

    Pluspunten

The kids are so kind and lovely, good team morale usually among the staff. Leadership wants you to improve. Leadership was kind and non judgmental when I said I was not returning for the next year, and did support me in being an effective teacher for the rest of the year in the ways that I could excel, such as with small groups.

    Minpunten

I was hired as an associate teacher, implying that I would always be in a classroom with a more experienced teacher. This was never the case. I co-taught with another first year teacher, and I was frequently alone in classrooms. Through the year I taught the following classes: 5th grade history, 5th grade English, 5th and 6th grade art. I rarely had breaks, and it wasn’t until I had been working straight through the day from 7:30am to 4:30pm with hardly more than 10 min to myself for months that leadership considered reducing my schedule. Grade team lead was not helpful at all, and always had meetings when I couldn’t attend due to teaching art, so I either had to miss meetings or get a random teacher to substitute, or have my co teacher work by herself. Meetings and discipline and scores were more important than student mental health and joy. Students cried daily out of frustration, panic, and hopelessness. The most I could do was smile at them during advisory to let them know that I cared about them. Leadership instilled the idea that if you aren’t scoring highly on all tests, you aren’t good enough. The way testing is taught to be the sole definition of one’s worth is toxic, and I rarely saw push back on that. Kids were silent for most of the day, including for part of lunch time. For a school, there is no emphasis on staff education. I was taught how to teach by people that have only been teaching a few years, that didn’t have degrees in education, and was expected to learn from my equally new-to-teaching peers.
