Sollicitatiegesprek

Applied at the beginning of June and got called for an interview 2 weeks later at 8 o’clock in the morning. The HR person asked me questions about motivation, salary expectations etc and then said she’ll check with the managers and get back to me about an interview. Got an email later that day with details about it. Interview was scheduled for 2 days after the day of the call. Once I confirmed I will be there, I got a response back to say I should study more about the company. The interview was conducted by 2 people from the department in question (Telematics). They had questions about me, but in the middle of it they asked me about what I know about the Telematics department’s services and products. I proceeded to explain everything I could recall from reading their website, but neither of them were pleased as I had a general overview than a specialised knowledge. This struck me as ridiculous since the products in question relate to businesses and individuals do not have access to their functions. Got told they had more questions about their products, but alas I didn’t know enough for them to proceed so they changed topic. This created a further negative impression of their interview process. At this point I knew I wasn’t going to get further with the job offer. I do not believe that question should have been asked on a first-contact interview as it does not help the interviewers get to know the interviewee better. In fact it casts a shadow over their training process of new employees and although they have explained further down the line that the training for the job is very intense, I still believe they should not ask an entirely new (to the company) individual about the firm’s products, especially when those are inaccessible publicly. At the end of the interview they told me I will hear by the middle of the following week if I will proceed to second interview with the Head of Support. Unsurprisingly I did not get anything that following week. It took them 7 business days to get back to me. In summary, the following affected my experience: 1. The time it took them to get to an interview and make up a response was too long 2. Asking questions not suitable for a first-contact interview Hopefully someone reads this and takes time to reconsider the recruitment and interview process.
