This opportunity is situated within the Planning & Engineering Road Network Europe department. Our team is devoted to augmenting operational efficiencies within our intricate road network. As we navigate the escalating demands and growth in volume, we remain steadfast in our commitment to superior network design and optimization, along with enhancing service quality for our customers. We strategically harness state-of-the-art technologies to perpetually refine our proprietary logistics optimization solutions. Our initiatives are not just confined to sustaining current capabilities, but also include broadening our capacities. We consistently explore opportunities for progressive upgrades and improvements, underscoring our unyielding commitment to innovation and advancement in our operations.
Building on this foundation, we are currently seeking a Data Scientist/Engineer Intern to join our vibrant and innovative strategic planning team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing enhancement/expansion of our in-house resource optimization tool. This tool plays a vital role in efficiently managing resources and drivers by leveraging advanced algorithms and mathematical optimization techniques to ensure compliance with labour regulations and achieve cost efficiency. Through this assignment, the intern will provide valuable insights that directly contribute to both our long-term strategic and short-term tactical decision-making processes, thereby playing a key role in continually enhancing our operational efficiency.

Job purpose: General description
The purpose of this internship is to provide a highly motivated Data Scientist/Engineer Intern with real-world experience in software development, machine learning, and logistics optimization. This intern will have the opportunity to contribute to various aspects of our logistics optimization tool, from front-end redesign to backend setup, and from data structure optimization to implementing machine learning models.
This role is not only about executing assigned tasks but also about bringing new perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. The intern will collaborate closely with our team to improve, maintain, and diversify our logistic optimization tool while making strategic decisions for its growth and expansion.
The intern will gain invaluable practical experience, understanding how theoretical knowledge is applied to real-world problems, and play a crucial part in our continuous effort to enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities


  • Analysing, refining, and optimizing existing data structures for better performance and readability.
  • Redesigning the front-end interface using modern frameworks like React or Angular.
  • Participating in backend and database setup to establish a scalable and secure architecture.
  • Exploring and implementing machine learning models to further optimize logistics.
  • Developing an exact module for driver-to-movement assignments and accommodating different vehicle types in the optimization process.
  • Participating in the expansion of the tool for deployment in new markets or countries.

Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, Econometrics/ Operations Research / Logistics/ Industrial Engineering and Management or related fields.
  • Familiar or willing to learn/work with Python, JavaScript, and HTML.
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React or Angular is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms and mathematical optimization techniques
  • Machine Learning is a plus.
  • Good understanding of relational database design, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player who is focusing on continuous improvements, is highly motivated, result-oriented, likes to work in an international environment.
  • Eligible to work within the European Union.

Objective: Enhanced in-house Linehaul Planning Tool
The applicant's key objective will be to enhance the backend, specifically by constructing a database for the panning tool and performing the associated engineering tasks.
The candidate will also be tasked with refining the MIP to accommodate multiple modalities and incorporate supplier costs.
Finally, the refined MIP for the in-house tool will be used to generate linehaul schedules for a particular region in the EU. I
We anticipate that the internship would be for a period of 6 to 9 months, but once the scope has been agreed and confirmed the required period could be adjusted accordingly.
