RESEARCHER MANOEUVRING
Wageningen

Do you share our fascination for the controllability and manoeuvrability of ships at sea and in restricted waters? Work together with us to develop and validate simulation software for manoeuvring applications.

Who will be your colleagues?
You will join our Propulsion & Operational Performance (POP) Team, which is part of the Research & Development department. The total R&D department consists of around 50 researchers and software engineers. Our mission as a POP team is to develop new knowledge, tools and workflows with the aim to develop safer ships toward zero emission for operational conditions. To ensure safe navigation and to allow the optimisation for operational conditions, there is an increasing need to simulate the behaviour of ships in a broad range of conditions: From transit to manoeuvring in port and anything in between such as when operating in survival mode in extreme conditions.

What are you going to do?
You will carry out practical and scientific research in the field of manoeuvring. Achieve complex nonlinear time-domain simulations for present and future applications and validate the results against available model tests will be part of your work. You will apply Data Science techniques to large sets of data into predictive models. Furthermore, you will support our colleagues from the other departments in applying your research results by setting up the simulation model. In other words, you will be the bridge between (in-house) code development and data collection and application within projects for customers.

What do we offer?

  • A stimulating environment which will allow you to develop while maintaining the freedom to choose your own path.
  • An attractive salary and benefits package, including our annual profit sharing and excellent pension scheme.
  • Lifecycle allowance of 5,55% of your gross monthly salary.

  • Flexibility in working hours and a hybrid working arrangement, to support your work-life balance.

Who are we looking for?
An enthusiastic candidate with a completed MSc or PhD degree in maritime technology (or similar) and relevant work experience in numerical simulation studies. You have the drive to fully understand and improve the mathematical and physical models behind them. You are a team player and able to take initiatives for improvements in close collaboration with colleagues in the different departments of MARIN. Good analytical, reporting and communication skills are preferable. You should also have a good command of the English language and be willing to learn Dutch if it is not your native language.
