I gave the features of the the pen and let him know why he needed to buy my pen instead of all of the other pens out on the market.

Easy! Ask them for their pen and then hand them a piece of paper and ask them to write their name on the paper....they realize they have no pen then sell their pen back to them. Knowing the immediate needs of the customer and meeting that need is number 1 to providing excellent customer service
