I applied to Minute Media's 12up Sports in the fall of 2017 as a social media intern, but after two interviews, the management team recognized my real passion and gave me a shot to be an in-office sports writer. I got the chance to report in the heart of Manhattan next to some incredibly skilled editors and fellow writers. I came in with very little breaking-news experience, but the team helped me find my own unique voice and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Not only did I grow more confident after each shift, but I saw my writing improve drastically in a short amount of time. The management team is so open to new ideas that my opinions were heard throughout the office, and I was given free jurisdiction to write them into my story topics. The culture there is excellent, and everyone always enjoys working together even on the busiest of days. The staff's openness to questions and desire to get me involved from Day 1 quickly silenced any doubts I had of fitting in, in a fast-paced environment. 12up has an immense foundation of talent within its building, and there really is no better place to start your sports journalism journey. They helped open the door for me, and I have already been offered multiple opportunities in the industry because of them.

Pay is not enough to save and retire to a happy little island at 60-years-old. That's expected with an intern position where most places pay you nothing for your work. Management is transparent with you all the way, and it's the value of the experience and connections you gain that make the job worth it.
