Pluspunten

Lots of PTO comparatively to other US based companies Good benefits Onsite cafe and marketplace Onsite fitness center Various employee led resource groups Many Helping Hands charity groups and opportunities to get involved with volunteering

Minpunten

Pay lower than industry standards during most of my time there. Now under Kroger's death grip. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger and was promised a level of autonomy but at this point they just do whatever Kroger tells them to do. Instead of promoting internally with tenured and qualified folks they chose to fill middle and upper management with folks from other typical poorly managed US corporations with poor corporate culture. Who then proceeded to take those same poor management skills and lack of culture and bring the company down. Many rounds of layoffs. The remaining people and future employees need to keep their heads on a swivel looking for the grim reaper as they may be next to get laid off as Kroger continues to completely eliminate and offshore jobs. Feels like the proverbial stuff hit the fan when the Albertson's merger failed and they got sued (all public knowledge), then the CEO, Rodney Mullins got kicked out the door (with a golden parachute of course) for inappropriate activities (of which we will never find out), also all public news.

Pluspunten

Time off remains a solid benefit, though the company has begun scaling back other perks, so it’s unclear whether this will continue to be a strong point. There is good flexibility to work from home, and even with the RTO policy in place, it appears that few employees are required to follow it strictly. Overall, frontline employees (G1–G3) are friendly, supportive, and often demonstrate the highest concentration of talent within the organization.

Minpunten

One of the long‑standing strengths of working at 84.51° was its history of avoiding layoffs and maintaining a strong culture. Over the past few years, however, leadership has done significant damage to that culture. Many members of management are long‑time employees who have never worked elsewhere, and the lack of broader leadership experience is increasingly apparent. The current CEO often mistakes abrasive language for effective leadership, and compared to the previous CEO, it’s difficult to understand how he was selected to lead the company. This leadership gap extends to direct management as well. Frequent reorganizations result in constant manager changes, and employees often end up reporting to “lifers” with limited outside perspective. Because the organization is relatively flat and there is a considerable amount of entrenched leadership at the top, advancement opportunities are minimal. Compensation has also become less competitive, and bonuses are inconsistently tied to performance, 0% bonuses are not uncommon. Recruiting new talent has become challenging because pay scales are no longer aligned with the market. On the engineering side, the company has increasingly outsourced work, and the skill level of contractors often falls between that of an intern and a new graduate. As a result, much of the job becomes managing offshore teams rather than doing meaningful engineering work. Morale within software engineering is extremely low, and turnover has risen significantly
