Minpunten

There is much to be said about how this company and the EMEA region is being managed. But if I had to sum it up for the sake of this review I would say ‘salary & compensation’. As an Account Executive, not only do you want to help your customers and work with smart people, but you also want to make a good living. Especially in a city as expensive as Dublin. At Asana they do not care about this. Let me say that again : they do not care about this. a) Territory/Books : From the get go it is likely you will be set up to fail. -closed book and small territory -too few inbounds diluted within an overstaffed salesforce Expect to be relying almost entirely on outbound for a solution that is still very much a nice to have. Be careful with the promises you might be hearing throughout the recruitment process like “the growth is phenomenal”, “you will have a large territory to explore”. The growth is somewhat good for very small accounts that are handled by third-party vendors and for a few Enterprise accounts. The Mid-Market sphere is Asana Achilles’ heel, where the competition is fierce (clickup, monday, etc.). Quotas : -they are unrealistic because they are seemingly based on ‘wanted growth’ and not tangible data -they are not equitable. For example, tenured AEs (2+ years) have slightly higher targets but the gap is very small -as of recently less than 10% of AEs hit their quota and many finished on less than 50% of their target Team/Atmosphere : Poor results and high turnover have been around since the previous Fiscal Year. Hence you will work with different 3 kinds of colleagues : -0/6 months - newbies with little experience (ex-Sales Devs or not even from sales) that are illustrating the difficulties in attracting and retaining top-tier candidates -1/2 years - medium tenured employees that are exhausted and stressed out about the situation. Concerned about how each next quarter is going to go. Some of them are on their 2nd or 3rd Performance Plan (they call it a different name to not have to comply with the law) -2+ years - long tenured employees who know their way around and are able to influence their territories as well as the inbounds they receive. They obviously share little about their success and keep their handy tricks to themselves like reassigning accounts in Salesforce and claiming revenue that wasn’t even closed by them Weak management & leadership : Managers are pawns while the leadership is weak and disconnected. It’s important to note that there is also little diversity. They will never challenge decisions form the top and they will systematically protect each other - especially when they are in the wrong. If the situation gets tense, your direct manager will rather throw you under the train or openly suggest you resign. Some people were told as part of their half-year review to be careful as to what they say in meetings and open forums otherwise it would be incorporated into their ratings. It is also noteworthy to mention that Asana has a Top-to-Bottom approach, where you can’t really disagree with top management. As a result, don’t expect the situation to improve. Leadership will just carry-on and blame employees for the poor results. conclusion : Account Executives are set up to fail and make little to no commissions. More precisely, I ended up taking a 20% pay cut compared to my previous job even though my OTE is 40% higher. To that, you shall add the stress it's causing and the waste of energy - hardly quantifiable but also important. There isn’t even a pension plan (they have presumably been promising it for years but still nothing yet). Don't make the same mistake and don’t let yourself be fooled with a high OTE, giant smiles in interviews or the company values. If you really want to join and can handle the pressure/stress, be a tough negotiator with the base salary.

Pluspunten

Great work culture, very caring people. Good leadership in several areas of the company - solutions engineering is a strong point in the company. Lots of very tenured people who are still engaged and have a long term perspective on what works and what doesn't. Very helpful.

Minpunten

Recent direction has been a lot to take in, with there being a slight disconnect between how visionary the plan is and how it is being translated to the GTM function. It will likely catch up, lots of very competent leaders and people who have been at the company for years helping close the gap. Enablement and new hire onboarding was something I saw some challenges with, but because people care about you so much, you end up at a good spot quickly.
