All negative reviews about the company and especially the CEO are true. The five-star reviews were most likely posted by a terrified employee while the CEO leaned over their shoulder and screamed. On the bright side, if you're on the web team then you won't be abused as much as the reservation agents.

Insanely unprofessional, backward and toxic environment. The CEO is a childish idiot who deeply despises technical people. He doesn't believe that anyone works unless they're threatened, and demands that everyone send him a daily email to justify their existance. Prepare to be publicly insulted if you spend more than four hours on any task. He doesn't understand technical things but refuses to believe that they can take that much time. Marketing decides how long technical tasks will take, and the web team is held to that deadline even if Marketing changes the requirements every five minutes. When a marketer tells you to add pop-up in the middle of checkout, you have to do it. If they ask for a brand-new feature one day before a big launch, you have to do it. Otherwise the CEO will scream and threaten to fire you, in front of as many people as possible. If anyone asks for a raise, ever, the CEO will call everyone into a meeting and explain why you should be grateful to have jobs. He'll claim that he hasn't had a raise since the 90's, but he won't talk about his bonuses, stock options, etc. Be prepared at all times to defend your existence, and remember to laugh at the joke he tells after he threatens everyone's jobs. Oh, and when he says "any questions?", remember to keep your mouth shut or he'll focus on you personally from that point forward. Management is a sad array of broken cowards, and will stop anyone who tries to write modern, industry-standard code. The word "research" is bad in that office. There's never time for research, because you always have to do something that marketing just made up after they found out that you were doing research. I'm not kidding. They think that you're not working if you're doing reseach, because that's just "playing around on the Internet". Customers have a horrible time on the site and are likely to leave in favor of Kayak, but any dip in sales will be blamed upon the web team. Any improvement in sales will be credited to the marketing department. (To one person in particular, really, as if they're the only employee in the company who contributes to sales.) There's a toddler on the fourth floor, and no one wants to give him bad news. As a result, he makes incredibly stupid decisions which the web team has to implement. If you improve anything on the site, it's because you did so in secret or learned a new technique on your own time. If you're a web developer, working at Auto Europe will harm your career. You'll be underpaid, the medical insurance sucks, and the CEO will assault your dignity on a daily basis. Innovation is not only discouraged, but actively stopped. Until the CEO is replaced with a rational adult, it's going to be a horrible place to work. Your life will be difficult if you work there, and you'll live in fear that today's childish tantrum will result in your termination. Don't do that to yourself.
