For those applying to Cority: be warned. The company is changing, and it's not for the better. Working for Cority (formerly Medgate) for a number of years, I often ask myself "Why continue to work here?". The pay is below industry, and the field itself is dull. But there's multiple reasons cority used to be a good place to work: the general atmosphere, the people, and the goodwill. Notice the use of the past tense. With a recent acquisition of the company and a wave of "operational efficiencies" "adversely affecting" numerous former coworkers (code for large number of layoffs of good people with seemingly no rhyme or reason), I feel the curtain has finally been pulled back, and the last bit of goodwill burnt away. Where once the atmosphere at cority was jovial, friendly and safe, now I'm constantly worried that saying the wrong thing in front of the wrong person might end with me cut. How the CEO can reconcile boasting about a company that puts people first, and having no politics, and can then lay off a dozen people with zero notice (including some that had worked with the company for more than 20 years) would take some pretty elaborate mental gymnastics. Great employees who shaped who the company was have been laid off, left, or are leaving and those in charge of hiring fail at getting people who would bring the energy needed for the company, instead, they’re forced to maximizing how much they can get for as little as possible; Cority loves underpaying new grads, new Canadians, and those in desperate situations. In fact, the CEO loves to brag about hiring a Syrian refugee, ignorant (whether willfully-so isn’t certain) that this employee is HIGHLY underpaid for their experience and skill. The latest project developed by cority has been, by all measures, a complete disaster, failing in large part due to attempting to develop a system built with new technology without being willing to pay to hire experts in said technology. And now it’s falling on current developers to clean up the mess. Suitably, this month’s “happy hour” was cancelled. In trying to change cority to be more “efficient”, I feel it’s lost the only things that kept it a company worth working for.
