At one time, FireMon's product was the leader in the Firewall Rules Management segment of the rapidly growing security software tools market. And under Gary Fish, the firm flourished with a highly supportive, and collaborative "one big family" culture.

FireMon and its many employees have been severely impacted by a perfect storm: 1) The company was sold to private equity form Insight Ventures in early 2015 -- at an absurdly high multiple. 2) The circa 2014 Version 7 of their Security Management product set was a catastrophe and prompted the decision to completely re-architect and streamline the product in Version 8. This curtailed sales and triggered a severe across-the-board downsizing in mid-2015 and caused the release(s) of Version 8 to take more than 2 years. And even then it was severely bug-ridden. 3) The CEO hired by Insight Ventures in mid-2015 was a horrible leader who seemed to alienate everyone in the company and obliterated their strong family culture. 4) While FireMon was attempting to deal with the above issues, their product segment cooled off and other very capable security software firms began to enter it.
