The COVID enforced shift to remote working was surprisingly smooth. There are some very focussed, dedicated, and wonderful people amongst rank and file and mid-management. Helpdesk/service desk teams (and leader JT) are excellent, and solid service delivery function. A number of project managers are rockstars in the face of unrelenting pressure. Flooid brand a big improvement on PCMS.

Leadership: CEO has a criminal lack self awareness, no perspective and no vision, and takes firm positions based on believing rather than knowing. People hired with knowledge and perspective are marginalised as leadership can’t handle the truth and the investors told “integrations” are the source of all their issues. Product: according to SVP Engineering the product is “older than his teenage children”. It requires IFX (PE) to sink millions to modernise but there is no money to tackle the mountain of technical debt! It is impossible to implement, defect ridden with testing and automation laughably poor, and eye wateringly expensive. Forget low code microservices and modern tools no matter how hard the slides persuade otherwise. Customer: viewed with contempt, blamed, given poor code/bad quality, and be expected to pay through the nose to fix. Organisation: is in a race to the bottom as the workforce including those with critical knowledge leave in droves. What remains is mediocre, creating a soul sucking work place with zero culture.

Salary is very competitive as is the flexibility in work location. Since current CEO took over, the committment to SAAS contracts has helped even out the once bumpy financial cycles. Diane Palmquist has guided the company out of a turbulent time and set us on a more sustainable path. Explicit career paths are being introduced to provide clear paths of advancement. It remains to be seen how those are implemented, but the fact that they are trying means something. The give-back committee has been a great addition to provide ways of giving back to the community. I plan to become more involved in this. Also, this company values a diverse population: racial, religious, sexual orientation...all are welcome. This is not just a company value but it's mine and my collegues as well. WE are the company we keep. Many reviews for software companies here on Glassdoor unfortunately stop there, but I'd like to add a bit about the software design side. The architecture of the software is improving as well. Staying closely aligned to Base Product was once a difficult task as many features demanded by customers were often added on top of a packaged release, with little thought to how that feature would fit as our Product advanced. Even if a feature wasn't fit for Base Product, or if implementing it in Product would take too long, we'd still implement it for that Customer. While this makes the customer happy, it made it hard to maintain and upgrade later. While that has yet to be completely eliminated, it is much less frequent and the company is more willing to communicate the value in waiting or doing things another way, to our customers. There is more effort in getting to the next version of product to get a new feature. There's still a long way to go, as upgrading is still too painful, but the monolithic application structure is fading away to a more modular and independently releasable one. This should enable the database underneath to become more modular as well, which should then allow for much more flexibility in deployments as well as upgrading as a more regular process. Even the POS is getting a facelift (with Micro-frontend modules) and a tummy-tuck (with a State Manager rewrite). Eric Bilange has lead the way with several great ideas and some key engineers have done some great work in these spaces. There are some great technical minds at work here.

The economics of global software development with a company based in the UK, often meant that US-based positions are rare and positions are usually only open if it cannot be filled by someone from the UK. Either because proximity to a US customer for a particular position was important, or because UK resources are cheaper. The overriding mentality seemed to be that US resources are too expensive, so we'll only hire them when we have no other choice. This was short-sighted and hopefully now that Flooid is part of Glory's International Business arm, this will begin to fade away as well. (Part of why I'm writing this review, actually)
