Pluspunten
Kongregate can be a really fun place to be. They hire people who tend to truly love games and keep the work environment casual and informal. There is little hierarchy to fight through so everyone from the top down is generally accessible (in theory at least) and they really do try to foster a feeling of "family".
Minpunten
I reported directly to the CEO, who was understandably busy but the upshot was that I had no guidance, feedback (except negative at times), or support. There was generally never a sense that employee growth and success were valued or prioritized, and I don't think that was exclusive to me. People didn't deal well with anything that was uncomfortable or difficult, or not "fun". Frankly I don't know if I could say I ever felt particularly that the company knew what it was doing although they are pretty successful. Communication was terrible. People ignored each other all the time and for placing such a premium on everyone being in the office as much as possible (don't believe them if they say that they are okay with working from home) the office could be silent as a grave unless someone was joking about something or a game was being played. I never received training or support and that was pretty common among most of the teams. If you weren't one of the cool people (producers, product) you could be expected to be largely ignored. Being left out of the loop was pretty common and even decisions that impacted you directly were rarely communicated in advance. Turnover was pretty high and usually I would attribute it to the management not having a solid sense of who or what they were looking for and not communicating with new hires what expectations were. Hard to tie this up in a neat bow, but I would say that the experience of working at Kong was pretty depressing on the whole.
