Pluspunten

The staff doing the day-to-day work are talented and hardworking. They are genuinely great people to collaborate with. There's also a strong union that advocates effectively for its members. The mission is important and worth believing in. Remote work is fully supported, and I never had trouble taking PTO, though in talking with colleagues, that isn't universal.

Minpunten

There's a culture of arbitrary urgency. Sprints are frequent, even outside of election periods. Requests often come in last minute and with the expectation that you drop everything you're currently working on. Then the work gets held up by layers of approval. Layoffs and reorganizations happen frequently, and internal surveys show morale trending downward. Even outside of restructuring, job descriptions can shift without notice, sometimes fundamentally changing the nature of a role or expanding its scope considerably and without any corresponding adjustment to pay. Raises and promotions are opaque. There is no clear criteria, no timeline, and little explanation, even when employees ask directly.

Pluspunten

Made me more confident in campaign coordination and digital advertising support. Also gaining experience in search, native, contextual, video, and display advertising. Interesting work, with different clients and projects. Good communication among coworkers, which is especially helpful during busy periods.

Minpunten

A lot to learn when you start

Pluspunten

I worked in the Contest Every Race initiative back when there was still a Research Team (it was unfortunately shut down and the team was let go, as the organization went in a different direction). I started as an Intern while still in University for my last semester, then moved on to being a Fellow for a summer, and then was brought on as a Contractor in the autumn. The work was VERY fulfilling, as we conducted research and sourced information on local races to be provided to local Democratic Party chairs to aid in recruiting community candidates to run for office in uncontested races. While hours fluctuated, $20/hour was a great payment amount.

Minpunten

Hours fluctuated greatly, especially during odd-numbered years when elections were less plentiful. I was able to stay afloat from doing 20 hours per week some months at $20/hour, but they often first offered 15 hours and I had to negotiate so that I could survive. Also goes without saying that as a Contractor, I had to pay my own quarterly taxes. In the end the biggest con was that the entire Research Team was dissolved and mostly everyone was let go. I tried to do some candidate coaching with the organization afterwards, but communication was terrible and I was never properly trained for it.
