The company’s mission to improve literacy across the US is admirable. Unlimited PTO, really smart folks, flexible schedule.
Minpunten
Below the surface, there are cracks. A lot of time was spent ideating on straightforward solutions and projects during meetings. A quick scan of NoRedInk’s team page answers any questions you may have about diversity. They tout diversity and inclusion as important; unfortunately, it seems like an empty platitude. A good number of the districts they serve have a substantial minority population, but the decision-makers continue to miss the mark because they themselves lack diversity. Without a variety of lived experiences and perspectives, innovation is impossible. To make matters worse, the company recently laid-off quite a bit of people and restructured some of the positions they did away with. The new positions unintentionally or intentionally target a very select group of candidates ultimately weeding out minorities. Rinse, wash, repeat. If this was done unintentionally, this would have been easy to catch had they had a diverse group of folks making important decisions.
