Pluspunten

The work atmosphere is an introvert's dream, and you'll either absolutely love it or hate it (I loved it). It's generally quite relaxed, and you will spend most of your time working on things on your own (although everybody is super helpful and just a Slack message away). The company has a small, non-corporate feel, and you will spend most of your shifts actually editing, versus doing busy work like completing annual online trainings or going into Zoom meetings. To me, it's basically freelancing without having to find clients and deal with billing (and also with a great support system in place). If you don't have much editing experience, you will be exposed to every type of (mostly nonfiction) document imaginable, from dentistry papers to nursing student essays to corporate handbooks. You're expected to learn multiple style guides. You will definitely gain a ton of varied experience quickly and constantly be exposed to new subjects.

Minpunten

Once you get through the initial training (lasting a few months), you'll generally get no feedback whatsoever on how you're doing except for when a client requests a refund and a senior editor has to review your work. There just isn't anything along the lines of formal quarterly/annual work reviews. As a senior editor, I had little ability to review associate editors' work other than when I worked on a large project with someone else, and I also never received feedback on how I was doing—Darren's (the sole managing officer) skillset is in tech, not in editing. There are no real career-development opportunities—few opportunities to take on special assignments and no trainings to prepare you for advanced roles. I realize that this is partly my fault as a senior editor for not developing educational content, but I also would have appreciated formal support to gain leadership or editing skills or attend editing conferences or seminars, for example. The work is cyclical and tends to revolve around the university schedule: busy around finals week and dead in early January and mid-summer. Overtime is easy to come by, but the dead times are pretty rough. Most editors tend to have a side hustle of some sort to help pay the bills. The 401k match is fantastic, but beyond PTO, there aren't really any other benefits.

Minpunten

since the sale to a new company in 2025--extremely low pay, no benefits, no transparency or communication from above
