Pluspunten

Access to interesting and complex project types with space to take on more responsibility; no ceiling to advancement. I joined RSS as a Part 2 and was supported through my Part 3 (successfully!) with one-on-one weekly input from a senior architect, lengthy reviews of PEDRs with the Director, and general support for the process. Unlike other practices, the company enthusiastically supports those seeking their Part 3. I'm very grateful for that. I had access to project experience through many RIBA stages during my time there; I wasn't resourced to just one type of work at one stage, again really great for Part 3. The practice is known for a high level of detailed design work through the construction stage so I had on-site responsibilities with great learning opportunities including working with listed buildings, higher education clients, new-build and refurbishment, modular and traditional. They are open to new technology and it is a good place to work to further BIM experience. I was invited to join the BIM User Group to troubleshoot issues and eventually joined the BIM Working Group to roll out company-wide practices. I had rudimentary Revit skills initially, and was given time to develop; ultimately I was responsible for BIM Level 2 project development and left the practice quite seasoned. They still have CAD and it's used for smaller, projects on short deadlines but a general move towards BIM was encouraging. The team is lovely, a great bunch of highly knowledgeable and friendly people work there. The balance between meeting deliverables and being disciplined with office hours was great. I rarely worked past my contracted hours (less than 5 times in 1.5 years) and was never expected to do so. While that should be an industry standard it's not always the case with architecture practices, good job RSS!

Minpunten

The location isn't great but I hear they're moving to Whitechapel soon.

Pluspunten

Modern workspace with great views. The team is collaborative and supportive, and the projects are engaging and thoughtfully executed.

Minpunten

While the work itself is of high quality and often rewarding, the tense office atmosphere and unapproachable management can make the day-to-day experience challenging.

There are absolutely no pros to working here whatsover.

Minpunten

Directors: Dreadful condescending directors - one of which in particular (the elderly lady) is a really rude person with very poor social skills who constantly berates staff, hangs up in meetings, threatens to fire people, throws tantrums on a daily basis, constantly complaining about IT issues So very little joy in their lives. She comes with the other director (they're married but they fail to mention that in the interview - really weird to find out) Very little support on projects. Zero upskilling opportunities. Zero advice for how to improve in areas. Zero advice on taking things from other projects. Not sure how two of the non couple directors are in the position they are. I suspect by nodding and saying yes to the empress helps. This company does not use Revit - only about 4 people know how to use it and the Bim manager is a beginner at best. The directors feel threatened by Revit because they haven't a clue how to use it. So it's Autocad for everyone practically. Very cold atmosphere on a daily basis. The location is dreadful - next to a busy highway. No place for lunch. The projects get value engineered to hell and are largely uninspiring. Very poor work culture. Extra hours are expected but never appreciated. Huge turnover in staff largely because how they are treated - it's just not worth the hassle to stay and endure vile toxic people. In a year I saw 15 people leave. All complained to me it was due to the stress from the empress. Far too many Part 2's and 1's who don't really do much on a project - too terrified of the director's wrath- and leave exactly at 6pm. I had never seen that from a Part 2 before. Oh and how can we forget - There is a cctv camera that sits on the wall and watches the staff. How is that for trust. Paranoid or what? Look at the other reviews - the negative ones are bang on. The positive ones are by two people who worked in the housing sector which is so small and never had to deal with the directors.
