I have really enjoyed providing mentorship to SCORE small business clients. I appreciate all the staff at my local chapter, they provide a lot of encouragement and support!
Minpunten
Nothing comes to mind. It has all been a positive experience.
Professional, Standardized Approach: Despite being a volunteer organization, SCORE is run like a serious consultancy. The on-boarding involves a thorough co-mentoring process and annual ethics training, ensuring you're equipped to a high standard. You aren't just thrown into the deep end.
The CRM is Your Friend: The organization uses Salesforce to manage client case history. This allows multiple mentors to seamlessly work with a single client over time, which ensures continuity and prevents you from having to start from scratch. A surprisingly effective system for a volunteer group.
Real-World Impact and Data: I've mentored over 250 startup founders since Jan 2020 and maintained an 80+ Net Promoter Score (yes, we actually measure that). It’s genuinely rewarding to see your experience translate into tangible community success.
Networking Perks: My profile on the national website advertised my specialties, which brought-in interesting consulting opportunities from across the US.
Minpunten
The Constant Demand: Our geographic region consistently receives far more mentoring requests than we have available mentors. Since I'm not retired (in fact, I had to put my SCORE consulting on hiatus in mid-2025 because I was so busy), balancing a regular job and the pressure to take on more new clients can be challenging. You have to be firm about your availability.
The Funding Rollercoaster: The organization runs on 10,000 highly-trained volunteers, but it still requires a few full-time employees and some operating budget. I understand that funding is in-flux due to the current federal government administration. It is unsettling that the essential operational support for such a high-value community service is subject to political whims.
