Minpunten
Some recent graduates, looking for full-time work, accept an internship with SpaceX as a way to "get a foot in the door". I was in this position and was repeatedly assured by the recruiter that SpaceX converts 70-80% of its interns to full-time. The first intern I met had been an intern for 12 months; he told me the last intern to be converted to full-time in his group had been an intern for 18 months first. This 12-month intern was soon told he wouldn't be converted, but thanks for working for a year without health insurance of benefits. I met someone else who was offered a summer internship after graduating, and when that ended, was offered another internship with SpaceX for the fall. At the end of the fall, this intern had to give an ultimatum - full-time or I leave - to get converted to full-time. I failed to ask my recruiter whether having an advanced degree would affect that "70-80%" conversion figure. I knew of five interns in my division who had advanced degrees and were chasing full-time offers. After six months, only one was offered a full-time position doing the work he was brought on for. Another was let go. The other three were offered new internships with different groups. I feel that I neglected to ask important questions about SpaceX's treatment of interns, and it came back to bite me.
