Hiring team made a few mistakes

I worked at this company for over 20 years, and for much of that time it was a genuinely great place to build a career. Early on, there was strong mentorship, capable engineering leadership, and a collaborative, engaging work environment. The projects were interesting, and there was a real sense of team and purpose.

Over the past 8–10 years, however, the company changed significantly. A shift in engineering leadership brought a noticeable decline in communication, transparency, and day-to-day management effectiveness. While the newer leadership presents well to senior executives, there is a clear disconnect between that messaging and the experience of teams on the ground. Expectations are often unclear, feedback is inconsistent, and support for engineers has diminished. In my case, my final performance review did not accurately reflect my contributions or performance, and I was not given clear or actionable feedback beforehand that would have allowed me to address concerns. This lack of transparency and alignment contributed to my departure. I also saw a steady loss of experienced employees during this period, many of whom left due to similar frustrations with leadership and the changing culture. What was once a collaborative and supportive environment became more siloed and difficult to navigate.
