Pay is fair for the amount of work required to do the job. Managers are moved between departments and stores every 1-2 years to cross-train which means you will never have a bad boss for too long. Significantly more good/competent/kind managers than bad, vastly more fun/friendly coworkers than bad. You can get almost as many hours as you can handle except during the few off seasons and there's always shifts up for grabs that people don't want. Managers generally understand what can and cant realistically get done and won't give you a hard time for not finishing impossible tasks. After my first year they hardly gave me a hard time for anything, really. Good for college students because they flex around your course schedule. Availability in general is king for applying, if you have 24/7/365 availability and you don't have a record then you can probably get this job. Its EZPZ to get hired as a seasonal team member and if they need a year-round part-timer they will usually hire directly from the best seasonal people. Almost every manager I currently have or had was promoted from within so there's excellent potential for advancement if you really put in the work for it. Occasionally overtime provides massive potential $$$. You can always spot the good clearance deals before everyone else which add up more than you think if you shop a lot. You can transfer between departments and even stores (I think) with minimal difficulty if you truly can't stand a certain boss. The longer you are here the more management trusts you and the easier it is to do your job.

New systems being constantly introduced means constant confusion over what your job actually entails. Every team lead having different priorities leads to further confusion and your day to day tasks can vary wildly depending on which team lead is there at the time. Formal training is bare minimum, you learn 80% of your job functions directly by asking other employees how to do certain tasks. Every type of scanner we get issued sucks for one reason or another, you will learn to hate the scanners. Under 18's generally only get hired for cashiering positions if at all because they don't have good availability. The backroom warehouse is cramped and hot. Store in general gets hot in the summer and slightly chilly in the winter. Registers get particularly cold during winter because you cant move and the doors keep opening and closing. If you plan to shoplift as an employee, its your funeral, virtually every item in the store is tracked and they bust people who thought they could out-smart the system all the time. There are consistent yearly "off seasons" where hours drop significantly and then slowly build up again. If you spend your entire paycheck in December when you're getting 40+ a week, don't expect to earn it back in January because hours can drop significantly for an entire month before recovering, this is further aggravated if you have bad availability. As a rule, only critically important employees and management get 40 hours every week. Certain sections of the store are plainly obnoxious to work compared to other areas. You have to provide backup to the registers when there isn't enough cashiers, preventing you from doing your primary job. Teenagers and tweens running around the store, riding bikes, and shopping carts, and bouncing balls will destroy your faith in the good of humanity as time goes on. Everything bad about retail in general applies to some extent.
