Pluspunten

Past the peers you work (who are all amazingly smart and fun to be around) there isn't much to offer here.

Minpunten

Phil is an awful CEO. Every conversation with Phil is filled with enough lip service, false promises and outright lies to simply get you out of his office and placate you in the moment. He is unable to show any real empathy toward his employees and is unable to make decisions that benefit the whole of the company over his own personal gain. Phil does not seem capable of properly running an organization with over 30 individuals. He has hired multiple, very questionable executive and senior leadership role individuals in regards to talent and professionalism. He does not provide his leadership with adequate training for their roles and consistently sets them up for failure (for which he's happy to blame them for). He also seems incapable of raising the proper amount of money to run a company of the size and type. He frequently uses awful analogies to describe his failures in his role as CEO. For example, "Overbooking the flight" to demonstrate some sort of reasoning of why the engineering team is constantly overbooked with unrealistic deadlines and projects. These analogies are frequent and abundant. The leadership at UniKey is also awful. The executive and senior level leadership is made up of unqualified and inexperienced individuals. Together they are unable to create a real vision for the company. This results in a lack of business goals and objectives with frequent focus changes and sweeping organizational changes. Reorganizations seem to happen on a bi-quarterly basis for no real reason. Poor decision making has led to multiple layoffs of lower level employees and engineering staff with little to no turnover at upper management. They seem incapable of holding themselves accountable for their mistakes. Anyone who has been promoted internally to a senior role carries an "I got my own and screw everyone else" mentality. They will back up Phil in person and then trash him behind his back (this is common throughout leadership at UniKey). Worse yet, leadership doesn't trust each other. As they will with Phil, they will also frequently cut each other down in private. They will work on secret projects to work on angling out other individuals in leadership as well. Often described internally at the engineering level as the "Game of Thrones." All of these failures and inadequacies are simply brushed under the "organization psychologies" rug and nothing gets done. They will have multiple off-sites where they argue with each other more than spend the time planning a solid business model for the company. None of this is stopped by Phil and often times seems encouraged since it seems easier to manage everything under the anything goes "prison rules" system. All of this seems to go completely unchecked by the board and investors of UniKey who you would think care about their investments. As far as lifestyle and career growth goes... expect neither. At UniKey you simply won't be paid enough to afford a relatively comfortable lifestyle in this market. You won't be provided with the proper amount of equity either to compensate the loss you'll take over multiple years of employment here. However, expect promises of financial grandeur and success with no real substance of how that will be achieved (both as a business and personally based on equity / salary). Forget other avenues of benefits as well. The insurance plans here are trash and multiple people relied on outside plans or their spouse's plans. There is no matching 401k to help you with retirement goals. You will not receive a yearly review, raise, bonus or feedback. Your individual worth to the company as an engineer is measured on the "Butt in Chair" system (censored for GD). You will frequently have to work overtime and crunch on projects that often never see the light of day. You will frequently find yourself not really knowing what you're building because the company doesn't really have a goal in mind or can't properly focus on the few tangible ones they have. There are no real pathways for career growth at UniKey either. If you come in as a junior or mid-level engineer your peers will never be afforded the time to properly help you grow. There are also no clear paths past being a senior / lead engineer. And being a lead for a team is simply being the person who is willing to tolerate sitting in multiple hours of RE-prioritization meetings each week. However, suck up to Phil and be willing to defend his awful decision making and you can become a VP (even if you have no real background or training in the role you get!). Avoid this place at all costs. Don't even base that opinion on this review. Talk to nearly ANY prior employee who has worked here.

Pluspunten

The concept and the technology are interesting and cutting edge. Incredible talent density and some of the nicest people I have ever worked with.

Minpunten

Since January the QA manager has left, two of the most senior web engineers have left, the project manager left, the last remaining co-founder has left and is contacting everyone trying to sell his shares, the COO resigned yesterday for "family reasons" and the company delayed everyones paycheck last week due to "best practices" which makes absolutely no sense. Several people did not know about the "best practice" payroll change announcement until their paycheck didn't show up on time because it was never communicated in writing ahead of time. We did get paid today thank God. To date nobody has been hired to replace any of the people that have left which has caused even more concerns about the company finances. I would sum it up as the wild west where the managers are in over their head and don't know how to run a business. There is no structure or consistency in what is expected day to day. It's a shame because there is so much opportunity and the people are so nice and get along so well. The atmosphere in the office is pretty defeated, feels like a sinking ship.
