Pluspunten

Work-Life balance can't be beat. I work for really smart and interesting people. I get to tackle tough problems with modern technologies. Benefits are great, and the office space is in a great place.

Minpunten

Raises are a joke. Still fighting with the old publishing company mindset. Hard to hire good people and/or keep them, and definitely various ranges of talent and accountability throughout the company. Also way too many contractors.

Pluspunten

For a big company that's part of a multi-national conglomerate, the Centennial branch of Pearson is not a bad place to be, especially if your inclined technically and/or educationally and/or have an understanding of publishing and media.

Minpunten

You're working in a company of many hundreds - lax performance, mediocrity, and grindstone mentality are hiding in some corner of each department. Information sharing and alignment issues continue year after year. Dynamic visionary brought in much needed honesty and strategy, but after initial inspiration might be in diva mode, diving down into operations and tactics. Sales people trying to act as consultants. HR banding may not be equal to your title or job duties. Career progression recommendation: Find / create alliances outside your dept / within greater Pearson.

Pluspunten

Met some cool co-workers, and now I can beat anyone's party stories for the worst things that can happen at a job

Minpunten

First off I will just say that Frontline, the PBS news documentary, did a special on the top 5 most crooked and manipulative online colleges in the country. These are Pearson eCollege's top 5 clients, so you will not have any feeling of doing good in the world while working there. But don't worry, you won't be treated like a good person either. In my time there I witnessed the help desk department heads steal time off from employees, frame 2 of them for crimes because they publicly disagreed with the Director, saw two manager sex scandals covered up, and (and this one is my favorite) once almost was trapped in a fire because they turned off the fire alarm in the help desk so we would work through drills. All for $14 an hour. Stupid me for staying so long. Oh, P.S., once they released a memo advising employees they were spending too much time in the bathroom, and praising our "best bathroom employees" as examples to follow. So, I take it back, that one is my favorite.
