      The first interview is mostly testing you whether you know their projects and are mostly open questions. The second interview is a tech interview which involves coding through the google docs. The coding questions are not that hard.

      I found an 'orly' post on reddit that promised fame and glory. Clicked on their website and it said it can run obj-c iOS code on android, I laughed . Then I saw that they already did this on some impressive titles such as sword and sworcery and kingdom rush so I retracted the jaw on my trollface and sent them a pm. A week later, after a short phone interview with the CTO that went over obj-c runtime, the recruiter flew me in, put me up in a very pricy airbnb for four days, paid me to interview (this was a surprise), attend a LAN party, and go to a hackathon with them. The actual interview process was not the typical string reversals and tree traversals, but much more interesting hands on work. Because the interview is on real problems, the interviewer does not already know the solution, so the interview is much more about demonstrating that you can use the tools to find possible code paths to debug or question the assumptions made, than about fixing the problem (although that's nice too). During the interview, I was able to help on some actual projects, learn their tools, and meet a bunch of people, and get a feel for what it would be like to work there. My biggest concern was that their culture would be too 'young' and 'bro-ey' like some other tech companies and startups, but I found that there was enough do-your-own-thing vibes in the air to dispel my worries. It's impossible to feel comfortable in an interview, but it was much more comfortable than other interviews I'd done at large corporate companies.

      Don't do it. In my "technical interviews," every person I talked to asked me if I'm into gaming - one even asked me to list out every game I have on my phone that I play regularly. I don't think their product has anything to do with gaming, which made it really weird. Lastly, after my third interview or so, the recruiter conveniently never got back to me until I followed up, when he told me I didn't make it. Terrible recruiting, weird experience.

      Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on our hiring process. We’re a bit confused about some of the details you mention, though -- are you sure you are reviewing the correct company, or that you are reviewing for the correct position at Apportable? Our technical interviews are conducted by the cofounder and CTO and are not focused on game-related questions as those are not important criteria for engineering roles. This interview is the only part of the process that isn’t hands-on with code -- the second (and final) phase is entirely pair programming on-site. Also, Apportable's products play an influential role in the mobile gaming community. The games we've shipped with the Apportable SDK are used by over a hundred million gamers. We are also the developers of SpriteBuilder and Cocos2D, which are a cross-platform game development IDE and game engine, respectively. It seems odd that you would think our products don’t have anything to do with gaming. Regardless, if you are reviewing the correct company and role, we apologize that your experience was not at the level that you expected. We take pride in our interviewing process and want the experience to be pleasant and exceptional, even in the case that we don’t end up hiring the candidate.
