McCarthy works in the Bloomington Pre-Op Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), was nominated for the DAISY Award after she walked an individual through CPR over the phone until an ambulance arrived. “The experience was a powerful reminder that nursing extends far beyond the walls of the hospital; our impact reaches into families and communities in profound and unexpected ways,” says the award nomination. “Everyone is human and everyone needs some sort of help in some form,” McCarthy shares. “We all have different gifts, talents and knowledge that others may not have that we should share with others.” Helping others can also mean assisting with someone else’s patients when needed or talking to a team member after long days, and McCarthy is glad to have a team that counts on and cares for each other. “Everyone acts like we are a team and not just an individual here. Tammy Chiafos never planned on becoming a respiratory therapist. It was not until Chiafos took her first steps by job shadowing at IU Health White Memorial Hospital, before enrolling in school and never looking back. “I was hired with IU Health right out of college. I had my interview the day after I graduated. A week later I was driving home from taking the first of three board exams (which I passed with flying colors) when I got the call from HR offering me the job. I was so excited,” she says.
