Baby deliveries don’t always come on schedule, and in two recent instances, expectant moms didn’t even make it into the hospital in time. However, caregivers at Riverton Hospital in Riverton, Utah and McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah were unfazed and responded to the parking lot to accomplish safe deliveries.

A couple of years ago, patients needing birth control could wait up to 10 weeks to see an OB/GYN or nurse midwife due to a shortage of appointments and industry-wide access issues. During a tour of the Intermountain Health Home Delivery Pharmacy, Matthew Wells MD, MBA, medical director of women’s health, and chief pharmacy officer Carrie Dunford brainstormed how they could use Intermountain’s Home Delivery model to address this consumer experience and access challenge.

A Salt Lake man, who is a veteran runner and marathoner, is thankful to be alive after suffering cardiac arrest at the St. George Marathon on Oct. 5. Dan Sorensen has run many marathons himself, but this time he and his son were there just to support and encourage friends during the last few miles of the St. George Marathon. At mile 23, Dan and his son, Oliver Sorensen began running alongside their friend for a short time when Dan suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground. His son turned him over and found his dad unresponsive, his heart had stopped, and he had injuries to his face and knees. Almost immediately, two Intermountain Health caregivers, Mike Henstrom, MD, an emergency medicine physician, at Intermountain Medical Center, and Julie Street, RN, nurse manager of the Intermountain Saratoga Springs emergency department, who were running in the marathon behind them, arrived upon the scene and jumped into action along with Katie Bradshaw Smith, RN, an emergency room nurse with MountainStar St. Mark’s Hospital who was also running in the marathon. “There are compassionate people and then there are skilled, compassionate people. It’s an interesting perspective to be the guy that was down on the road, and for people who were there to run a race, to sacrifice their time and use their medical skills during what were very critical moments for me. They gave me the chance to keep living. That’s pretty telling of the kind of people they are,” Dan added.

Hearing that the food stinks or a paint color will make patients barf in the waiting room probably isn’t feedback most caregivers are used to hearing. But the feedback hits differently when it comes from people who are intimately involved with the hospital — especially from teens who have spent much of their lives there. When people think about children’s health, they often think about younger kids. But a large portion of Primary Children’s patients are teens. Primary Children’s Hospital Youth Advisory Council (YAC) gives teenage patients and their siblings a voice to contribute and improve a place that’s shaped their lives. “They genuinely want the hospital to be better,” said Emmy Minges, a child life specialist co-leader. “They’ve experienced it. Being in the hospital is hard, and they all love making things a little bit better.”

St. Mary's Regional Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado is the first community hospital – and one of only five hospitals nationwide – to be verified at the highest level by the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery's comprehensive inpatient Vascular Verification Program. St. Mary’s was recognized for its vascular surgical quality, nursing care, patient and staff safety, timely patient access, education, and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The Vascular Verification project required input from more than 30 members of the hospital care team including vascular surgeons, nurses, clinical leadership, and support staff. Spear-heading the project was Tej Singh, MD, MBA, medical director of vascular surgery at St. Mary’s and a current participant in Harvard Medical School’s Surgical Leadership Program. “We’re grateful to Dr. Singh for his instrumental work in building a high-quality vascular program and achieving vascular verification. These efforts include timely patient access and work with the vascular quality initiative registry, national accreditation, care compliance, surgical leadership, and mentoring,” said Benjamin S. Smalley, chief operating officer for St. Mary’s Regional Hospital. “Dr. Singh’s passion for vascular and endovascular care, and his team-based leadership have helped grow our program to deliver the highest-level of vascular care to our community.”
