Enhancing Sustainability in Steel Production: RHI Magnesita’s Solutions As the global community prioritises the reduction of carbon footprint, the adoption of innovative technologies becomes crucial for steel producers. In this context, hashtag#RHIMagnesita offers several innovative solutions. 2 examples are presented here, relating to Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and Tundish applications. 1. EAF Direct Purging Plug Systems (RADEX DPP) Our integrated systems include state-of-the-art gas purging systems as well as the functional DPP purge plugs and optimise the melting of steel by injecting purging agents through the furnace bottom. The presence of the continuous inert gas bubble columns provides metallurgical benefits in the EAF: increased metal yield, increased dephosphorization, lower nitrogen levels with argon gas stirring, higher control on the FeO content of the slag, and most importantly, the avoidance of overoxidized slags. Further benefits include higher productivity, reduced energy consumption, and improved heat distribution, especially for larger EAF sizes (>150mt). 2. Tundish Cold Setting Technology A self-hardening mix with non-toxic binder technology. Requires only 1.3 - 1.5 wt.% water addition and no external heat supply. Zero energy consumption due to cold setting, enabling cold start practice. Smooth and reproducible lining technology for short and long sequence casting, with fast tundish turnaround and a small tundish fleet...
