You will need to spend a lot of time networking internally to learn the next role inside out before you apply in order to be considered. It's catch 22 - to network to the level they expect, your current role is likely to take a hit. Some people get promoted that haven't achieved much in their current role because they have been focussing on the next role more. Some people are promoted into senior roles that are not experienced enough.
