Pluspunten
- Opportunity to learn cutting-edge technology and get hands-on interesting projects - Nice and competent colleagues here (not China side) - Above-average pay (of course can't compete with FAANG though)
Minpunten
A LOT, I highly recommend avoiding this company if you have other options! 1. Most employees are contractors and almost impossible to become a FTE even if you perform well. Only people with PhD will get a full-time offer. Contractors don't have any benefits other than the base salary. 2. Parking is bad; a huge pain during winter times. 3. Now it requires 5 days a week. 4. Awful upper management: frequent change of directions, unrealistic requirements and deadlines, and bad decision-making without fully understanding the current situation and risks. 5. Most of the time your team leads/manager can't provide enough technical guidance or help on your work. 6. The 12-hour time difference makes it extremely difficult to communicate with China side; most people in China side can't even speak English fluently, and they won't adapt to our time (which means you need to regularly attend meetings with China side at night, sometimes even every day for a critical project). 7. Extremely fast-paced and workload can be overwhelmingly high with very aggresive deadlines. Endless work after work, as if something keeps pushing you forward non-stop instead of having your own pace. Last but not the least, Huawei is the representative of the typical, toxic Chinese workspace culture. Huawei employees in China are extremely stressful with strict KPIs and need to work their head off to get the job done and well, so 9-9-6 (or even 0-0-7) is the norm. Since almost all projects are led by China side, the management in China expects everyone to follow their pace and work style. For instance, they take it for granted that you should attend their meetings every morning at 9am (which is 9pm at our time); that they expect you to work even during weekends to fix bugs or meet the deadlines; that they expect you finish some work immediately within 1-2 days, without realizing that there's a delay of message due to the 12-hour difference, or its our weekends or holiday time. No respect for the work culture here at all, just expect everyone to work our head off as well like in China. Also, due to a very stressful and fast-paced work culture, most people on China side have an aggressive tone and may easily lose patience when you communicate with them, if they don't like what you say. If you can't speak Chinese, they usually appear more patient due to the language barrier; if you speak Chinese, then they won't treat you very well and can get harsh on you.
