What to expect from a company lead by a narcissist

You do get to learn a ton in a short time. You will make real friends with your colleagues and feel part of something, this is nice for those people who are in need of that.

Minpunten

Before, I said that you get to learn a ton in a short time and that's all you'll have: a short period of time. Average tenure is under a year and from what I could calculate in my time there, bunq has a turnover of around 50% ... Back to the narcissist part: Ali, the CEO, is a guy who is convinced that bunq is the best company in the world. He says every other company headquartered in Holland is mediocre and that the reason why work-life balance is inexistent at bunq is because he is giving people the honour to work for the most prestigious company in the country. Take a look at bunq's social media, app reviews and glassdoor and judge for yourself. The guy says people can't have an ego if they want to work for bunq but he has the biggest of all egos. Those weekly meetings at 6pm on fridays. 6PM ON A FRIDAY! Seems like he does that cause he desperately needs people to clap every two minutes to boost his ego. Man needs some counselling. He is involved in every little thing. By this I mean, he is a micro manager to the core. He is involved with how the kitchen and chefs are organised, he sometimes will grab a marketeer's laptop and do his work for him. He designed the version 3 of the app. A software engineer with no training on UI UX design!! Of course it was a disaster. His ego was blocking him from seeing he is not capable of such a thing. It all boils down to the same issue: this man is a narcissist who believes he can do everybody's work and do it better than them. He trusts only a handful of people in the company which is probably the underlying issue for most of their ridiculous HR policies and some of his own practices such as him messaging team leads if their employee took more than 30 minutes to have lunch, or if a team member is just waiting for dinner to be served. Because god forbid someone actually works 8 hours a day instead of the minimum 8.5 hours he wants you to work. And I won't even dive into the fact that coders inevitably do 60 hour work weeks. Finally, his obsession with making a process for everything seems like a strategic way to make people disposable. He has thousands of processes in place so he can get rid of whomever he wants and put a new person there who should be able to do the work since there is a process for everything. Again, turnover is so high, they are constantly hiring because people will leave within a couple months and the poor recruiters have to deal with it. Because that's what you will hear, even from HR, that "Ali is Ali and you just have to deal with it".

The brand attracts a lot of talented individuals and if you are lucky you will have a team of supportive colleagues, who will ease the suffering. Also you will learn to appreciate a good company culture if that was not a priority for you before.

Minpunten

Where do I start… There is no job security, transparency and equality, those are probably the most important. Diversity is not there either, neither in race nor gender, the management are almost all white males. It is the first time I saw people not passing probation period for no big reason. People go through complicated interview process, move from other countries, leave stable employers - all to be thrown away after the first small mistakes they have made (with no or little feedback prior). And if you stay - prepare to be broken and molded into what the company wants you to be, your previous expertise and ideas do not matter much. The company operates with “ownerships” and it gives the illusion that you have some influence on the processes, but in reality it’s all micromanaged to the tiniest detail and the CEO is involved into pretty much everything as well. And if he does not like color yellow, then nothing can be yellow etc etc Working overtime is normal and being looked at as a good performance, and the super inflexible working hours of 9 to 18 are there to reinforce it. This is not a place for people who want to have any life outside of work. Be ready to receive work related messages at any time of day and night and receive feedback in such forms that you have never received before. The work itself is a pure chaos and management will try to stress the hell out of you at every step, expect no assistance whatsoever while there are ridiculous expectations for a (less than) average salary. There is always someone coughing their lungs out at the office, as you only get 70% of your pay if you call in sick, so people think they cannot afford it. All the company events are also happening after working hours or on the weekend, they took the “work family” thing to the next level really. Hybrid model is a joke - for the first 3 months you have to be in the office every single day for no good reason, working from abroad is complicated too. The office looks like a student dorm with mess everywhere, mice and furniture falling apart. There are lunches and dinners for a small fee, but it’s super basic and you will see couscous in your nightmares afterwards + occasionally you will find expired drinks and condiments in the fridge that no one removes.

I tried my best to write down as many pros as I can but I’m pretty sure I can’t write all the cons in one try! 1) Management: we have so many young managers who are not even 25! First you think it’s a great opportunity and you can also grow fast. But it’s not how it works! Most of the managers here don’t have any leadership skills and they are manager because they are loyal to the CEO, they are good at bullying their team members and they don’t disagree with company decisions even if it doesn’t make sense and even if it means their team should work over time to deliver sth that wasn’t a part of the plan. 2) CEO: He is everywhere. He codes, he does pr, he is product and design manager, hr, and literally he is everything! This is good for a 5 person startup but bunq has more than 300 people who want to do their job but he doesn’t let them! You can work hard on sth based on your knowledge and he can revert all your work without even saying anything. He bullies people in general slack channel whenever he wants. If sth goes wrong he will mention some people in the general channel and attack them. This never happened to me but just reading how he talked with others could make me saddened that how it’s even possible! 3) Working Equipments: we eat our lunch in not completely clean dishes because the dishwasher has been broken forever. The coffee quality is poor and you should go to a coffee house and buy your own. The chairs are horrible! Everyday you should search the office to find sth that is not broken. Monitors and desks and all the other equipments are the same. 4) Personal Respect: as I said you can easily get bullied, you don’t have normal human standards at the office and for me it feels like the modern slavery! Even the toilet paper is the worst quality you can find! I’m 100% sure even in public toilets you can’t find this quality! 5) Technical Respect: again like before it doesn’t matter what you know by profession. If CEO says sth else then you should just follow and don’t say anything. Micromanaging at its highest levels. 6) work-life balance: they say 8 is great, nine is fine! Then we have half an hour for lunch and then we can’t leave work even a minute before 6. Do the calculations yourself. But after all of it some times you can’t finish all the things they want from you and you should know that over time working won’t be compensated. In one sentence, you work a lot without any recognition or appreciation. If it’s perfect, then it was you doing your job (mostly managers get credit for the job) and if you fail, shouting and bullying and 5ys will come. (5 y is a document we should write down when we mess sth) 7) Chaos: we release sth today and revert it tomorrow. There’s always chaos in higher management decision making and you can waste so much time doing and undoing stuff. Also because the rate of people leaving is super crazy, your team and your teammates can change like 5,6 times per year. 8) Salary: It’s the minimum you can get anywhere in The Netherlands. Right now because other companies facing economic difficulties, it’s a little closer to the market range. 9) Hire/Fire (bullying): People are short term investment for the company. As soon as they have some opinion and they don’t want to just follow, they would be bullied by their managers and hr till the end that they resign. 10) who are the good reviewers: we talk with our colleagues and we really don’t know how it’s possible for bunq to have this much good reviews. Maybe new comers who hasn’t suffered still, maybe higher managers… I really don’t know! Why people are here? Most people can’t even stay for a year. They leave as soon as they find sth else. But this manner toward people who don’t have other choices is super mean! My advice? If you have any other options, go for the other one. If don’t, the best thing you can do is to lower your expectations to the minimum and never bother yourself with disagreement with your manager.
