The Chandra X-Ray Observatory, one of the NASA Great Observatories, was deployed by the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1999. It was designed for high-resolution imaging of X-ray astronomical objects from space. Lincoln Laboratory developed and assembled the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), one of two imaging systems on board Chandra. The ACIS contains ten chargecoupled device (CCD) imaging arrays that were fabricated in Lincoln Laboratory’s Microelectronics Laboratory. Each CCD array comprises a million pixels. Two of the imaging arrays were specially designed back-illuminated devices fabricated by using a novel high-temperature oxidation and annealing technology developed at the Laboratory in order to achieve high quantum efficiency for the detection of very-low-energy X-rays. The Chandra Observatory continues to make important contributions to astrophysics and to rely on the ACIS for 95% of its science imagery.

Through a SkillBridge internship, Connor Mathews, a U.S. Army service member applied his experience identifying compromised communications to a research program on steganography. “I could tell the Laboratory was an excellent environment and that it developed incredibly impactful technology. I lack experience in this type of research and development. It gave me a desire to participate in that,” says Mathews. Learn more about Connor's work at the Laboratory: https://ow.ly/jxP350TUtfh
