Physician Job Description
Each practitioner is responsible for daily rounds on his or her inpatients, who are admitted either through the outpatient clinic or through the emergency department during the practitioner’s on-call day. All practitioners also generally see appointments and walk-in patients in the outpatient clinic Monday through Friday. On-call coverage includes attending to admitted patients both in the ICU as well as the Medical Unit after hours, providing consultations and/or admissions through the emergency department, and providing consultations to other inpatient services upon request. Call coverage runs from 8am to 8am the following day and averages 1:4 or 1:5, depending on current staffing, with a goal of 1:6.
Weekly Schedule
The Internal Medicine Department holds team Grand Rounds every Friday morning to review each inpatient in the medical unit and the ICU together. On other days, all practitioners are round independently. On Wednesday mornings from 7:30am to 8:30am, all medical staff are expected to attend the hospital-wide Continuing Medical Education meeting, during which topics of general interest to our practitioners are presented from each department on a rotating basis. Regularly other meetings, such as Morbidity and Mortality and/or Peer Review, are called on a rotating basis. After morning meetings and rounds the practitioners generally staff the outpatient clinic for the remainder of the day. The post-call practitioner sees appointments only at his or her discretion in the morning and is excused from afternoon responsibilities.
