Disappointing product culture

Pluspunten

DAZN is a good brand and has the potential to really disrupte an entire industry and provide better access and experience for sports fans across the globe. Genuinely good people there, a place where you can make friends.

Minpunten

Company stability The company has gone through 4-5 major re-orgs and executive changes in less than 2 years, lots of strategic changes and shifts, very little consistency and stability. At its root, investors are becoming more and more impatient towards the company's performance and timeline of reaching profitability. DAZN has been pulled back from the dream of 'becoming the Netflix of sports' to 'stop bleeding cash and break even, which makes good sense to shareholders, but if you are looking for your next 'big thing' and wanting to do something rather exciting and meaningful, DAZN is not your desitination. Product Culture DAZN used to have a brilliant product leadership from Amazon and BBC. Empowered product team who really care about and defend customer experience, use data and run experiements as a daily habit. Sadly, that had gone, virutually all of it. The 'Test & Learn' product culture has been erased completely, even the budget for Experimentation Tooling & Platform was on the edge of getting cut off, all the product managers had to join together to help build a case to defend that budget. You can get a sense of how bad that is for a product professional. Product org took a 180 degree turn to a textbook waterfall working culture, product managers become delivery mechines and have no mandate to advocate for customer expeirence and data. In contrast, many shortsighted decisions were made and forced upon product teams where customer experience is not anywhere near the center of decision-making, everything is about short-term business returns, what is more astonishing is that executives are not even open to test & measure whethere those short-term business returns are realised. Almost the entire product leadership resigned and many good product managers left the business. In Amsterdam alone, DAZN lost its 3/4 product team in 6 months. This is not a place for someone who wants to build up and develop a career in product management.

Pluspunten

I noticed that at the beginning of this month there was a sudden surge of Glassdoor reviews for DAZN. Not sure if there was any internal request to write a positive review on Glassdoor, because the company is struggling with attrition, but it urged me to write a review too to share my experiences. The positives: - Interesting and competitive industry - Being able to contribute to a sports product used by millions globally

Minpunten

I was drawn to DAZN because of their product, and to get the experience of working at a start-up-like / scale-up company. I'm with the company since 2019 and to me, it feels like my progression has come to a stop now. There are several things that I expect from an employer that I want to emphasize here: Personal growth: - I hardly learn new things anymore, the company doesn't offer any leadership training, besides the usual communication training. - There is no individual learning budget, or if there is any, then the company is very obscure about it. Getting approval for out-of-company training is hard Professional growth (career progression): - There are no clear paths to progress your career as a manager - I can count the number of conversations about potential career growth that I had on one hand - For higher management positions we see that the company tends to hire instead of giving their own employees a chance to step up and prove themselves Strong leadership: - I have been too often in situations where senior management made hasty, uninformed decisions. - I have seen C-level leaders blaming entire departments for situations that they inflicted themselves - As a team leader, you want to be able to look up to senior leaders and learn something from them, but I feel there is hardly anything to learn from the leaders that I've seen. Culture: - They say "you build it, you own it", but what they actually mean is "we decide what you need to build asap, and if it breaks it's your fault". The approach is very much top-down - Siloes - With the new CEO that's brought onboard I feel that things even have become more top-down - Leadership communication is appalling and the lack of transparency is astonishing. (We're still waiting to hear what our targets for 2021 were, and leadership promised to keep us regularly updated on the progress against the target) Compensation: - Company seems to be behind its financial targets (or not doing so well), the focus on spending and budget is increasing. Leadership put a sudden salary freeze and a promotion freeze in place last year, and it is still in place. Good people aren't rewarded for the hard work that they've put in. - Salary is below the market (I've had offers 35% higher without even negotiating, and within my current role there is no room for salary growth anymore) - Salary increases in very small steps (if there isn't any freeze in place) - No L&D budget - You'd expect a stock package at a company like this, but they say this isn't possible because it isn't a listed company (which is nonsense of course) - Secondary benefits are non-existent, apart from the secondary benefits that are regulated by law. To summarize: The first year has been fun, I learned a few things here and there, I had a sense of being part of a larger system and I felt I made an impact. I've put in hard work and hoped to be able to progress my career here. Now after more than two years I truly feel like this isn't really a company where you can progress your career. And, by looking at the average time people stay with DAZN, there are many who feel the same. Not saying that the grass is greener outside, but I'm certain that I can do the same job for better compensation and better career opportunities somewhere else.

Tech stack is good enough.

Minpunten

Management is totally abusive. Every daily is a nightmare. Team mobility is a lie. I asked to change teams but instead was asked to send resignation. So everyday they would setup a 1:1 meeting to pressure on that. They refused to pay untaken holidays and money agreement that they proposed themselves. Terrible situation, worst that I ever faced in 12 years, 3 countries career.
